Coiled Caverns
This work focused on scale and form, using coils of clay built up in layers. I let the natural movement of the clay form the shape of the walls as I go up, which creates an ever evolving and spontaneous shape. Working on multiple forms at one time, I can be less precious with the shape and get some really interesting curves within the walls. I enjoy working with the red terracotta clay for hand building because of the beautiful color and the way it mixes with alternative materials within the clay like grit, iron spangles, and iron oxide. These materials create a striation effect on the surface of the finished piece.
